Bann Ladies win Inaugural “Cookstown Cup”

On a wet, windy Tuesday night Bann ladies WJ18 eight, swept to a historic victory over a very talented Methody crew to win the final of the Northern Ireland WJ18 ladies Sprint Championship and the inaugural “Cookstown Cup”. Raced over the same 1,500m course as the men’s equivalent, when Bann mens J16 eight recently retained the “Craig Cup”, this magnificent Ladies win completes a great double for the Bann Rowing Club.

Bann’s sponsors “Cookstown” had generously agreed to initiate a new, woman’s sprint rowing championship to encourage ladies rowing throughout Northern Ireland.  The final race was of such high quality that Club President, Bobbie Platt MBE remarked that either crew would have acquitted themselves well at International level. After a good clean start by both crews, the next 1,000m was a very close, neck and neck affair, and it was not until the final 500m that the Bann ladies really asserted themselves.  With Cox Lily Ferguson’s excellent steering, and stroke Sarah Allen’s assured composure throughout the race  all combining perfectly to ensure that the Bann Ladies had an extra gear in reserve for the finish and they really turned on a blistering surge to win by a clear length.

Club Captain Keith Leighton said that Bann winning both the mens “Craig Cup” and the ladies “Cookstown Cup” showed that the team of volunteers who coach at Bann had a winning formula, and that the enthusiasm of the rowers, their families and parents had laid down the foundations for these historic successes.
