New Club President

New Club President

Pictured is newly elected President of Bann Rowing Club, Billy Bones being welcomed by Club Captain, Keith Leighton, and Vice Captain, Geoff Bones.
Billy was pleasantly surprised when Bann elected him as their new President to replace the late Bobby Platt MBE, a legend in the rowing world and who actually coached Billy and his son Geoffrey, now a coach with the club. Billy believes that to fill Bobby’s shoes would be impossible and considers himself lucky were he able to fill one shoe but is determined to give it a good try. He is very aware of how the sport has progressed since his rowing days and realises what a mammoth task the committee have in organising and fulfilling their objectives which to date have been very successful in producing Olympic oarsmen Richard and Peter Chambers with a great prospect of another in Joel Cassells. Unfortunately everything has its price and rowing, like and maybe more than some sports nowadays, has become very expensive. Even with the help of some donations and grants the club still needs to attract new sources of funding to enable it to purchase state of the art equipment. With this in mind Billy, in conjunction with Bann, is hoping to attract support from the public, and in particular from the many hundreds of past oarspeople and their families who have been connected with the Club over its 175 year history, by becoming Associate Members paying an annual subscription of £25.The Club would also be delighted to hear from anyone who wishes to offer any special talents or skills that would aid in any further development of the club. He also feels that now more than ever that it is vitally important to encourage more parent participation, and hopes that more parents will become enthusiastically involved in the clubs activities. This can be anything from fundraising right through to learning to coach!

Should anyone wish to become an associate member or help the club in anyway, please contact the Club via our website or facebook page or simply call in at the Boathouse for a chat.
