Huge Month for Bann Rowing Club.

Huge Month for Bann Rowing Club.

Huge Month for Bann Rowing Club.

These are tremendously exciting times for everyone at Bann Rowing Club.  For the first ever time the Club has had the incredible news that all four of Bann’s senior International stars have be selected in Olympic boats for the forthcoming World Cup regatta in Bled, Slovenia. Big Alan Campbell returns in the open weight scull, Richard Chambers stays in the LW double scull and both Peter Chambers and Joel Cassells, the new European record breakers & gold medal winners, move into the LW four.

But Bann’s International connection now includes our current squads of rowers with five fabulous ladies, Fiona, Hannah, Rebecca, Katie and Brega being joined by three eager young men, Timmy, Dylan & Aaron all gaining International selection for Ireland in the forthcoming Home International Regatta in Strathclyde Scotland. Who else was seen back sculling at Bann other than Brook Edgar, Bann’s recent L’Coupe de la Jeunesee Gold medal winner, home from her second year studying Astrophysics in Michigan State University USA. We also have the great news that Erin Barry will soon start studying at Princeton, the Ivy League research University in New Jersey and Dylan Mitchell has become the first ever Bann man to be selected to race at the prestigious Beker International Regatta in Holland.

With less than one month now left to the Irish Rowing Championships and Bann set off on the long journey down to Athlone with a very strong representation ranging from men and ladies Junior 14’s right through to their legendary men’s master’s eight. And the Club enjoyed a tremendously successful day with some highlights including Bann’s very powerful & technically gifted ladies WJ18 eight absolutely crushing their opponents from St. Michaels and Portora, plus the ladies WJ14 coxed quad, continuing their unbeaten run of four wins in four races by defeating crews from Portora, Athlone and Carlow. In the men’s section some excellent victories were the young pair of Aaron Christie and Timmy Davidson beating good quality MJ18 opposition and then teaming up with “dashing” Angus Hamilton & “big” Chris Parrish to win the MJ18 coxed four beating a huge crew from Athlunkard in the process.  In the Masters section not only did the Bann win the men’s ”E” category fours beating a very experienced Neptune crew, but their racing “eight” then again defeated Neptune in an exhilarating race with all four big racing eights only being separated by half a length at the finishing line. Man for man this was most encouraging for the “old tigers” as this was exactly the same Bann crew who had been well defeated by this same Neptune crew just eight weeks previously. Special mention must be made of “fighter pilot” Cox Aaron Rogers who coxed winners in both mens, ladies and masters sections in an unforgettable day of race five wins for him.

Currently at Bann’s boathouse the beginner’s nights on Friday evenings continue to be very well supported and with school examinations finishing shortly all the Bann coaches at will be putting their final touches into place to try and gain just that little bit extra boat speed for the final regatta of the year, the big one, the National Irish Championships in Inniscara, Cork. Up the Bann!!
