Bann Rowing Club Medals at Irish Championships

Bann Rowing Club recently travelled to Cork to compete in the 2013 Irish Rowing Championships.  For the first time Bann were competing in the womens junior 18 eights and the womens novice eights. Brega Mullan, Beth Montgomery, Hannah Scott, Katie Shirlow, Naomi Wray, Erin Barry, Rebecca Meenagh, Francesca Morelli and cox Ellie Earl were all, with the exception of Erin Barry, competing at the Championships for the first time.

The womens junior eights event was a straight final with Cork BC, Shandon BC, Shannon BC and the two in form crews of Portora and Galway BC.  The Bann crew were beaten by Portora in Belfast at the beginning of June by 4 lengths and were keen to improve on this.  All crews got off well from the start and reigning champions Galway started to ease out a slight lead by the 500m mark.  Bann were locked in a battle with Portora while the others were starting to fall off the pace.  By 1000m Galway had secured a lead of about ¾ length and Bann were still holding onto the Portora crew.  Coming into the finish Galway had pulled away to 1 length of clear water and Portora had just managed to move out to ½ length lead over Bann who were pushing hard again but were unable to pull Portora back.  Bronze medals is a great result for the young Bann crew given their improvement and fighting spirit to finish so close to both Portora and Galway.

In the womens novice eights event the same Bann girls raced and won their heat in style.  This qualified them for the final against older crews from Shannon RC, Trinity Ladies BC, UCD, Commerical BC and Queens University BC.  Queens got off the start well and by 1000m had pulled out to  lead by over a length from Bann who had dropped all the other crews.  In an exciting race Bann started a push to pull the Queens boat back. They steadily reeled them back to ½ length with 200m to go and were still catching the Queens crew right up to the finish line.  This was a real gutsy performance from the young Bann crew who fought hard against the older Queens crew.  The girls had now added silver medals to their bronze medals from the previous day.

The club were also represented in the mens senior and intermediate pairs by James McAfee and Conor Logan.  In the senior event the Bann pair found the pace to high and finished 5th in the heat so did not proceed to the final.  The pair competed on the Sunday in the heat of the intermediate pairs where they rowed comfortably to win their heat.  This qualified them for the final with UCC, Portora, NUIG and Commercial BC.  UCC took an early lead and held it easily to win with Portora and Bann fighting it out for silver and bronze.  Bann battled hard with Portora but could not get past and had to settle for the bronze medals.

The womens pair of Emily Hutchinson and Brook Edgar were competing in the intermediate and senior events.  In the heat of the intermediate pairs Trinity and UCD secured 1st and 2nd spots which left Bann and Commercial BC fighting it out for the last qualifying spot.  Both crews were fighting hard coming into the finish but Commercial managed to stay ahead and pipped Bann by 0.7 of a second to secure 3rd place.  The Bann crew were disappointed but had to pick themselves up to race in their senior event on the Sunday.  They rose to the occasion and secured a qualifying place for the final,  however the pace was just too quick for the Bann pair who eventually finished 5th.

Club captain Keith Leighton and coach Geoff Bones were delighted with the clubs haul of silver and bronze medals.
