Bann Head of the River report

Fabulous Rowing at the Bann Head of the River
To everyone’s amazement, the conditions for the recent Bann Head of the River races, were excellent sunny skies and flat water. The entry included 81different crews from Carrick on Shannon, Belfast and Portadown.
The two races were devided between smaller boats in race one, where Bann’s very strong MJ18 coxless four won by a minute, and a minute and a half respectively, from RBAI and CAI MJ18 coxed quads. The fastest ladies crew was the Bann Intermediate quad.
In the second race, no less than fourteen big racing eights provided the enthusiastic spectators with really exciting viewing. Bann ‘s MJ18 eight unbeaten run in Ireland since July 2009 continues, in their still unbeaten boat ”The Sizzler”. To the delight of the big crowd and their coaches, their time of 13:22.. proved 1 minute 24 seconds faster than anyone else’s on the day. Bann Masters eight showed very good, early season technique in their tussle with old rivals Belfast Boat Club, Belfast Rowing Club and Lady Victoria.
The excellent results set the club up nicely to meet the Mayor for a reception at the Council ‘s Cloonavin Headquarters, where the Mayor appreciated the unbeaten Bann J18 eight, Irish Champions 2010. This crew had all sacrificed School and Irish Honours to win The Irish Championships for BANN. Bann ‘s winning time of 5:54 was exceptional for this agegroup, as was their record creating eighth in category performance in the London School’s Head. The captain of Bann Rowing Club, Keith Leighton thanked the Mayor for acknowledging BANN’s achievements and for hosting a wonderful reception. Keith then invited everyone to meet the three Bann World Rowing Championship heroes, down at the Bann Clubhouse on Boxing Day Monday, at the scratch races where “Big “Alan Campbell,” young” Peter Chambers and World Champion Richard Chambers would all be racing for the Big one…a win in the Bann Boxing Day Races.
